Pakistan and China discuss arms control, non-proliferation

Pakistan and China held their eighth round of bilateral consultations on Wednesday, discussing a range of issues related to arms control and non-proliferation.

Pakistan and China discuss arms control: Beijing was the venue for the two-day conference, which included discussions on the regional and global security environment.

The Foreign Office spokesperson stated in a press release that Mohammad Kamran Akhtar, Additional Secretary (Arms Control & Disarmament/Policy Planning) from Pakistan, and Sun Xiaobo, Director General from the Department of Arms Control, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, led their respective delegations.

The group from Pakistan also paid visits to prestigious think tanks in Beijing, such as the Chinese Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICR) and the Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA).

The visits resulted in the decision to strengthen the strategic outreach between the think tanks and research institutions of the two nations.

Additionally, The 9th round will take place next year on a mutually convenient date, the two sides agreed.

Prior to the negotiations, Additional Secretary Mohammad Kamran Akhtar spoke with Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong of the People’s Republic of China.

In-depth discussions on China-Pakistan relations, the global and regional security environment, and a number of other topics of shared interest took place during the meeting.
