The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to raise the electricity rate by Rs2.07 paisa due to a change in fuel prices, leading to an expected increase in the power tariff.
Power tariff likely to increase: If approved, the rise in power rates due to the fuel price adjustment for electricity used in July will last for one month. On August 30, the Nepra will hear the appeal.
The CPPA has submitted a petition to Nepra, stating that nuclear facilities contributed 14.29 percent of the total power, coal-fired plants generated 14.68 percent, natural gas accounted for 07.61 percent, and hydropower plants produced 37.18 percent.
Rising electricity prices are already straining power users, and this increase will further contribute to the burden.
On the federal government’s request, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) announced earlier in July a significant hike in the base power tariffs of up to Rs7.50 per unit.
The power regulatory agency announced in a statement that the higher pricing would go into effect on July 1, 2023.
The latest increase in power rates will not apply to lifeline customers. The base rate increase will not affect protected clients who consume 200 units or less per month.
