Raja Riaz, a former opposition leader in the National Assembly (NA), President Arif Alvi proposed the election date “under pressure.”
Alvi suggested election date ‘under pressure: According to specific details, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja called Raja Riaz to discuss the general elections schedule.
The former opposition leader claimed that rather than announcing the election date, the president simply suggested it.
Although the ECP has not yet announced the election date, Raja Riaz stated that he believes the general elections will most likely take place in the middle of February 2024.
In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner sent yesterday, President Arif Alvi offered November 6, 2023, as the date for Pakistan’s general elections.
President Arif Alvi pointed out that the Prime Minister advised the dissolution of the National Assembly on August 9, 2023, and that the Constitution of Pakistan grants the president the authority to announce a date for general elections “no later than ninety days from the date of the dissolution (of the assembly).” Consequently, the eighty-ninth day following the dissolution of the Assembly, which is Monday, November 6, 2023, is the deadline for holding the elections.
The months-long argument over who has the authority to announce the election date—the President or the ECP—has come to a head with the declaration.
