PTI seeks more time for response in intra-party elections case

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) asked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for extra time to submit a response in the issue involving intra-party polling.

PTI seeks more time for elections case: In front of a five-member commission led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, Barrister Gohar represented PTI.

Barrister Gohar begged the ECP at the beginning of the hearing, “I have to appear before IHC today in an important case. Please give me more time to submit a response.”

The Election Commission of Pakistan granted approval to the plea, resulting in the postponement of the hearing until August 15.

The next hearing will feature the submission of the party’s response by PTI’s attorney.

It should be mentioned that the PTI had requested an extension to June 13 this year, even though the party’s internal elections were scheduled to end on June 13, 2021. A final notice was provided in June 2022, the ECP continued, and another delay is not feasible.

Under Section 208 of the Elections Act, all political parties had the obligation to regularly elect officeholders at the federal, provincial, and local levels in accordance with their respective party charters.

A proviso to section 208(1) of the legislation said, “Provided that a period, not exceeding five years, shall intervene between any two elections.”

The Election Commission legally mandated a political party to submit an updated list of its central office-holders and executive committee members, along with the requirement to publish this list on its website.
