After the head of the Wagner mercenary group promised to overthrow Russia’s military leadership and claimed possession of a crucial military headquarters in the south, Russia on Saturday announced a “anti-terrorist operation regime” in Moscow and the surrounding area.
Russia Declares Anti-terrorist Operation In Moscow: The nation’s national anti-terrorist committee declared in a statement that “an anti-terror operation regime has been introduced with a view to preventing potential terrorist acts on the territory of the city of Moscow and the Moscow region.”
Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Wagner, stated that he was present inside the army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in the south. He further claimed to have control over military facilities during the time the statement was made.
In the southern Voronezh region, where some reports claimed Wagner mercenaries were also headed, Russia also proclaimed an anti-terrorist operation.
Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, stated that the action “aimed at strengthening security.”
He added that there was “additional control” on the roadways and that large-scale events in the city might be curtailed.
