The Punjab government, led by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), dissolved the provincial legislature, throwing the nation’s largest province into a political tizzy. Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman is expected to reveal the poll date within the next 24 hours.
Before the establishment of the caretaker setup, the Punjab governor is required to proclaim the election date. This is as per articles 105, 224A, and 224 of the constitution. The deadline for the Parliamentary committee to name a temporary chief minister is tomorrow, January 20.
Earlier on Wednesday, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, the chief minister of Punjab, slammed his political rivals. He claimed that they were playing politics with the issue of the acting chief minister.
Speaking on the subject, Mr. Elahi remarked. He said, “Unlike the names chosen by the PML-N, our nominees for the coveted interim Punjab chief minister position are impartial.” Mr. Elahi attacked his critics, declaring, “The opposition’s goal regarding the coveted Punjab chief minister seat would never be achieved.”
Mr. Elahi stated his optimism that the committee, which is headed by the Punjab speaker, will be able to address the matter of choosing a caretaker Punjab chief minister. He also asserted that only a caretaker chief minister will be chosen and that no one could oppose him.
