ISTANBUL: According to Turkiye, two alleged Kurdish terrorists who died while carrying out an attack in Ankara over the weekend had their training in Syria.

Ankara attack assailants trained in Syria: In retaliation for the attack on Sunday, Turkiye now reserves the right to hit a wider variety of Kurdish targets in both Syria and Iraq, said to foreign minister Hakan Fidan.

One of the attackers was shot dead by Turkish police, and the other perished in a suspected suicide bombing outside Turkey’s interior ministry.

In the event, two cops suffered injuries.

The two terrorists arrived from Syria and received their training there, Fidan stated in televised remarks, as a result of the efforts of our security personnel.

“Our security forces now have legal targets in all infrastructure, major facilities, and energy facilities owned by (armed Kurdish groups) in Iraq and Syria.”

Turkiye and its Western allies have designated the Kurdish PKK militia, which carried out the incident on Sunday, as a terrorist organization. This was the first incident in Ankara since 2016.

A few hours later, Turkiye launched airstrikes against PKK sites in Iraq.

According to Fidan’s remarks, Turkey may increase the scope of its airstrikes to encompass war-torn Syria.

The Kurds of Syria have established a semi-autonomous region in the north and east of the nation.

In 2019, the struggle that drove Islamic State group fighters from the last bits of their Syrian land was led by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), the de facto army of the local Kurds.

Turkiye, however, sees the SDF’s dominant Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) as a PKK offshoot.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, has repeatedly threatened to intensify his attacks against the YPG.
