U.S. Condemns Sexual Assault in Manipur: In reaction to a disturbing incidence of sexual assault in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur, the U.S. has expressed extreme concern. Outrage across the country and around the world has been generated by the assault case involving the public stripping and parade of two women.
The Event and Its Repercussions
More than two months ago, during a violent ethnic conflict between the Kuki tribe and the predominate Meitei ethnic group, the horrible tragedy took place. The event did not, however, come to the notice of the country and the rest of the globe until the recent dissemination of the video clip on social media.
The victims testified that a mob severely assaulted and publicly displayed both ladies, aged 19 and 21, naked at the height of the conflict primarily focused on potential changes to the Kuki’s economic perks. Police have made multiple arrests as a result of the considerable outrage aroused by the horrible event’s viral footage.
A representative for the U.S. State Department expressed the nation’s sympathy for the victims in a statement, calling the tragedy a “brutal” and “terrible” act. Following the bloody skirmishes, New Delhi sent a sizable army and paramilitary force to Manipur, a state with 3.2 million residents, thereby putting an end to the immediate unrest.
However, isolated acts of violence and murder have now resumed, heightening the state’s already perceptible anxiety. The death toll from the violence has increased to 125, and more than 40,000 people have been evacuated.
