The top executive of WhatsApp on Friday refuted a Financial Times article that said the messaging service was looking at advertising as a way to increase revenue.
WhatsApp denies report exploring ads: “This @FT article is untrue. Will Cathcart, the head of WhatsApp, wrote on social media X, formerly known as Twitter, “We aren’t doing this.
“The FT story states that teams at Meta have been debating whether to display advertisements in contact conversation lists on the WhatsApp chat screen, but they have not made any decisions yet.”
According to the story, which cited three people with knowledge of the situation, Meta is reportedly debating whether to charge a monthly fee to use the app without advertisements.
“FT reported that many corporate executives opposed the change.”
Meta did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
